Ulil Abshar Abdalla or familiarly called Gus Ulil is an Indonesian Muslim figure who developed Sufism thought through virtual recitation of the Book of Ihya Ulumuddin via his personal Facebook. Based in Jakarta, he is the founder of Ghazalia College. Gus Ulil is serving as Chair of the PBNU Lakpesdam for the 2022-2027 period.
Artist and Cultural Figure
Tanto Mendut, whose real name is Sutanto, is an Indonesian artist and cultural figure. He is the founder and leader of the Komunitas Lima Gunung (Five Mountains Community) which often holds international scale arts and culture events on top of the mountains by always empowering the people on the five mountains, namely Merapi, Merbabu, Andong, Sumbing and Menoreh. Sutanto is the recipient of an award from the Aesthetic Science and Technology Foundation for his persistence in empowering society through sociocultural life.

He received the 2020 Indonesian Culture Award in the Creator, Pioneer and Reformer category from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.
Painter
Jumaldi Alfi is a painter who works sequentially on a set of ideas and themes. He is a graduate from the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) in Yogyakarta, and a member of the Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela (Jendela Art Group), one of Indonesia’s most prominent contemporary art collectives. Alfi is one of the key members of the progressive movement of Indonesian contemporary art, where his pieces present how Western contemporary art affects Indonesia’s art and society.

Yuta Kuroki was born into a family that inherits the Japanese ‘Kagura’ (sacred music and dancing performed at shrines) from generation to generation. Since he was a child, he has been familiar with the Japanese ‘Kagura’, a traditional Japanese performing art. He began his career with a musical theatre company in Miyazaki when he was a university student. He quickly moved to perform on stage and got a chance to appear in several TV commercials and films in Japan.

Paul Elbers, born in 1958 in Hilvarenbeek, Holland, has been a musician since childhood, crafting a unique blend of Western and Eastern music during his years in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Influenced by gamelan music, his songs reflect Indonesian life. With two albums under HKM, he also contributed to various groups and festivals in Holland. Paul married to Dewi, they reside in Warffum, Holland, restoring a historic house. His latest release, "De Turk (The Dervish Version)," features artwork by Nicolaas Werkman.

He is Indonesian (on father’s side) and Dutch (on mother’s side). Growing up in France, contact with his cultural heritage has always been from afar, through his regular visits to his family in the Netherlands and through the stories told by his grandparents.

He has produced seven albums and performances in Jazz, World Music, Neo-classical, Electronic and Experimental Music. His vision is to narrate an immersive music scenario telling pure emotions.

The Gamelanhuis Foundation is a collective of gamelan groups with a common goal: to provide space for gamelan orchestras and thereby stimulate the development and performance of gamelan music in the broadest sense.
The ensembles represent various forms of gamelan music: classical compositions from Java and Bali, new Indonesian music, but also music from Dutch soil for the specially Western-tuned 12-tone gamelan that is placed brotherly next to the beautiful Indonesian instruments.
Workshop Presenter
Benny Arnas was born and raised in Lubuklinggau, West Sumatra. He was awarded the Auckland University of Technology Cultural Activist Program grant (2016) and had written 31 books. Since 2020, he has developed "Story by 5", a formula for writing fast, pithy, & measurable stories. This formula led him to win the National Novel Writing Competition about Rasulullah in 2021. In the same year he received the Nugra Jasa Dharma, the highest award in the field of literacy from the National Library, for his dedication to fostering a reading and writing culture in Indonesia.

Warta Kawarsa is a contemporary research project rooted in ceremonial ritual art, aiming to purify spaces laden with dark memories. Inspired by the Javanese/Indonesian philosophy of sugihan, which honors ancestors and the earth while maintaining cosmic balance, our work utilizes mantras, movements, sounds, and installations to reinterpret traditional rituals as art, offering a fresh perspective.

In this session, a well-known Indonesian vocalist and cultural figure, Sabrang (Noe Letto) will have a dialogue with the cultural figure who founded the Festival Lima Gunung, Tanto Mendut to talk about the role of villages and their communities in building world civilization.
