The Suluk and Art Exhibition is an initiative by PCINU Belanda aimed at illuminating the richness of Suluk manuscripts, alongside other Nusantara Manuscripts, and cultural expressions. By unveiling manuscripts preserved in the Netherlands to the public for the first time, this exhibition, co-curated by Indonesian and Dutch experts, serves as a pivotal step in the decolonizing effort. It delves into Suluk’s significance, provenance, and intrinsic beauty, offering profound insights into Nusantara’s (Indonesia) ancient tradition.
Furthermore, the exhibition presents the artworks of four distinguished Indonesian painters—Jumaldi Alfi, Nasirun, Tisna Sanjaya, and KH. Mustafa Bisri (Gus Mus). It also includes “La Salaga,” reintroducing the visual-less narrative from an ancient manuscript by Louie Buana. Additionally, it showcases the efforts of the Nawasena team in recreating Batik Lasem and reclaiming the traditions of Lasem’s people. Visitors will also explore the collection of Irama Nusantara (iramanusantara.org), offering insights into the evolution of popular Islamic music in Indonesia from 1920 to the present day.
Come join us for a unique opportunity to meet and interact with two renowned Indonesian artists – Nasirun and Jumaldi Alfi. This in-person event will take place at the Museum Bronbeek. This event is part of the Art Exhibition “Story and Tension” organised by the Netherlands Special Branch of Nahdlatul Ulama (PCI NU Belanda). This exhibition is part of Festival Islam Kepulauan: The Voices of Archipelago on 4-20 May 2024.
